Little Big Packs
The joy of carrying hi-performance packs! Little Big Packs are for those that want pack bag sizes under or around 3,000+ cubic inches that can still handle some weight, especially when you tie things on or add accessories. These packs can carry 35 lbs very comfortably (all day comfort) even with our simplest harness. The packs are available in 34" circumference, 35", 36", 37", 38", 39" and 40". Below: Dyed Full Spectra LBP 36s in action in the Cascades.
See the pack volumes page in the Secondary Menu to play with the range of volumes. The pack below is an LBP 36; 36 means it has an untapered circumference of 36" giving it a general bag volume to the top of the frame of 2,500 cu in. and close to 3,000 if filled 5" taller. According to the Volumes chart, each inch in height for this circumference is 103 cubic inches. Add a lid and it goes over 3,000 ( see Sarc Accessories ) Shoulder pockets are available - see the Presto Pocket.
Below: LBP 36
Although the pack down below is relatively small it contains an Integral Designs MK XL tent w/poles, Western Versalite sleeping bag, an Ursac half full of food, full raingear (not UL), med weight Lowe fleece pullover, and an Integral synthetic belay coat and plenty of room left for other layers. When packed with UL gear during warm weather, it can easily handle 10 day trips. The second pack below has an Integral Designs Unishelter lashed to the rear. All LBP packs can be ordered in the even simpler Subpop style with no 'MX' compression strap system.
We are also now making our compression strap system completely removable - the straps attach at the loop-lock buckles seen in the photos - in the 4th photo 2 types of buckles can be seen attached to the looploc rectangular buckles. The system is versatile - even cord and cordlocs can replace the compression strap system. Different buckles can be added and their orientation reversed and they can be left at home when you want a cleaner pack. The system makes it possible for straps and buckles to be easily replaced and updated. In the final 2 photos the upper compression straps have been removed. Final photos show a zippered pouch rather than the drawstring pouch coupled with a small tent. Almost anything can be lashed to the versatile widely spaced daisy chains. The pack up tp photo # 3 weighs 2 lbs, 10 oz and can be made lighter. In photo #4 with water pockets but without the upper 4 compression straps, it weighs 2 lbs, 14 oz. It has a Full Spectra bottom. The large rear pocket weighs 5.8 oz, and the 2 layer summit lid with bladder holder underneath weighs 8 oz. For people that are fit and not over-weight, this pack can comfortably carry 40 lbs. This pack was made for someone 6'2" tall and is considered a Lg size pack. The total bag length is 35" and maximum usable volume for the bag alone is about 3500 cuin - the point being that larger packs are heavier also. The last photo shows a tent lashed horizontally to the 'vertical' daisys to show this can be done. This can create a good platform to stack other objects.
A tent lashed horizontally to the 'vertical' daisys can be a good platform to stack other objects. White LBP is shown as an example of Challenge Fabric dyed white. The UHMWPE fibers if undyed tend to look like a neutral monofilament shade.
